Marni Martin, Weaver

Marni Martin creates handwoven tapestries and wearable fibre art. Rich hand-dyed colours and sensual fibres are central in the creation of each piece.  Texture, light and colour have always played important roles in Marni's work and reflect her attention to her surrounding environment.

Marni Martin, Weaver
Deep family roots in Muskoka and a love for the landscape have shaped Marni and continue to evoke a sense of wonder that she carries into her weaving.

Commissions of Marni's work are inspired by people, places and spaces.

Marni explains that this piece is a commissioned work to be placed in a local dental office. The tapestry is going to be used by the dental team in various ways to connect with the patients.

"This project has been a very delightful one for me as the dentist commissioning the tapestry has visited the studio throughout the process bringing me closer to not only the work itself but to the person commissioning it."

Not often to we get to see the back of a work of art.  This is what the back of the tapestry looks like when it comes off the loom. Each of the yarn ends has to be knotted and trimmed to finish the back and get it ready for hanging.

The Muskoka Autumn Studio Tour on September 28, 29 and October 5, 6 will allow you a glimpse into Marni's studio, her loom and how she creates her art.  For more information about Marni, go to:

Scott Turnbull Celebrates Earth Day

Earth Day.  A time to celebrate the beauty of Muskoka as we deal with high water and overflowing rivers.

Scott Turnbull's camera captures the magic of Muskoka as the mist rises from a lake in the luminous glow of the sun.  Inspired by nature, Scott works from The Stable Studio, a renovated horse barn just outside the village of Windermere.  This spacious gallery houses Scott's fine art photography and is also the home of his two horses.  Tour Scott's gallery during the Muskoka Autumn Studio Tour September 28, 29 and October 5, 6 from 10 am to 6 pm.

Oil tempera is Scott's preferred medium. Literally tempera (egg) mixed with oil, it allows the colour clarity and technical strength of tempera, yet permits for the immediacy of oil painting.

"The subjects I tend to gravitate towards are those of life's contrasts - neither the ideal nor the philosophical, but the experiential."

Pandora by Scott Owles

Scott captures Pandora's emotions on his canvas. Could it be amazement, astonishment, fear or wonder?
